About the event

Join Aldo Leopold Audubon for an October Field Trip to Sandhill Wildlife Area on Sunday, October 24th from 4:00pm to dusk.

Sandhill Wildlife Area in Babcock, WI is a major staging area for Sandhill cranes on their southward migration each fall. From mid-September until early November, cranes in increasing numbers seek the safety of the shallow waters of Gallagher Marsh as a nighttime roost. After feeding in nearby agricultural fields during the day, the cranes begin to arrive at sunset and continue until dark. Peak numbers can reach 5,000 birds. To witness this spectacular event, we will sit along the open dike or watch from the observation tower overlooking the great marsh.

Sandhill is about 17 miles west of Wisconsin Rapids on County X. Please meet at the Sandhill gate at 4:00pm to drive to the interior of the refuge and a short 1/4 mile walk to the dike and tower. Since the area is open to the public, be prepared for social distancing and sharing the tower with other birders. Masks are required at the tower. Please dress warmly and be expected to be amazed.

Group Size is Limited for this event. Please call Nancy Stevens for reservations at 715-498-5373. In case of rain, the event will be cancelled. This event is free and open to anyone. Visit the website for more opportunities like this -- www.AldoLeopoldAudubon.org.
